So many questions …
we’ll try to help explain, but council has much to answer for
Planning & Zoning questions
-
Kingaroy Airport is strategically zoned for aviation-related activities and future aviation growth. Many planning professionals have questioned whether a large workforce accommodation camp aligns with the intended purpose of the Airport Zone.
-
There are concerns that approving non-aviation development within the Airport Zone could establish a precedent that undermines future planning decisions and the long-term protection of the airport.
Economic Impacts
-
While major construction projects can create economic opportunities, many residents question whether a largely self-contained workforce camp will deliver meaningful benefits to local accommodation providers, restaurants, retailers and other businesses.
-
While Council has suggested the camp will have a three year life span, residents are concerned about the long-term economic implications if temporary accommodation or associated infrastructure remains beyond the proposed construction period. This can potentially affect future commercial opportunities.
Community Amenity
-
The airport precinct is home to several long-established volunteer organisations that make an important contribution to community life. Current airport tenants include the Kingaroy and District Vintage Machinery Club, Men's Shed, South Burnett Junior Motorcycle Club, Kingaroy Observatory and various airport-based groups.
These organisations represent decades of volunteer effort and community investment and many residents are concerned these organisations could be displaced or disrupted.
-
These organisations have been built through decades of volunteer effort and provide valuable recreational, educational and social opportunities for local residents.
Traffic & Transport
-
The community is seeking assurance that the full traffic impacts have been independently assessed, including the effect on local roads, school routes, emergency vehicle access and daily commuters. Residents believe any proposal of this scale should demonstrate that increased traffic can be safely managed before any approvals are granted.
-
Many residents are concerned about whether existing road infrastructure has the capacity to safely accommodate hundreds of additional vehicle movements each day. Independent traffic modelling and appropriate mitigation measures are being sought.
Environmental Impacts
-
The proposal may affect vegetation, airport land and surrounding environmental values. The community believes these potential impacts should be independently assessed before any decisions are made.
-
Residents are seeking clear information about how any environmental impacts would be avoided, minimised or managed, including protection of vegetation, wildlife and surrounding natural areas.
Heritage & Community Values
-
The airport precinct is far more than vacant land. It supports clubs, volunteer organisations and community groups that preserve local history, provide education, foster social connections and contribute to community wellbeing.
-
Many residents believe these facilities represent decades of community investment and should be protected for future generations rather than being compromised by short-term development.
Safety
-
Residents are seeking independent assessment of road safety, emergency vehicle access, airport operations and the potential impacts associated with increased workforce movements throughout the construction period.
-
Many community members believe any development within the airport precinct should clearly demonstrate that aviation safety and operational requirements will not be compromised.
Infrastructure Capacity
-
Questions remain about whether existing roads, utilities and public infrastructure can accommodate a development of this scale without placing additional pressure on local services.
-
Residents are seeking greater clarity about the long-term ownership and future use of accommodation buildings, roads, utilities and associated infrastructure once the construction workforce is no longer required. Many believe these issues should be resolved before any approvals are considered.
